Hanesbrands seeks to reduce the environmental impact of the raw materials we use in our products and product packaging. We are using some recycled materials in our products and are reducing the quantity of materials in our packaging.

  • The vast majority of our production material is cotton, which can have significant environmental impacts. We buy nearly all of our cotton for internal production from the United States, in part because the advanced farming methods used by U.S. cotton farmers result in lower impacts on the environment.
  • We also use recycled materials in some of our products. Our EcoSmart® polyester fiber is made from recycled plastic bottles, while some of our socks contain EcoSmart cotton yarn made directly from textile cutting waste.
  • We work aggressively to reduce plastic and paper used in our product packaging. Simply decreasing packaging size on a few high-volume items has saved more than 200 tons of plastic packaging film in the last three years. The virgin paper in our packaging is certified by the Forest Stewardship Council, an independent organization that promotes responsible forest management, and we use recycled paper in the packaging of some of our core, high-volume products.

Environmental life cycle assessments of cotton garments have shown that the majority of the associated energy use and carbon emissions – and much of the water use – comes from washing and drying by consumers. Consumers can make a difference by washing our products in cold water and donating or repurposing old clothing when possible.
