Hanesbrands seeks to reduce waste and recycle wherever feasible. Through our Global Environmental Management System, we track all waste generated in all of our manufacturing and distribution facilities and offices – 27 different waste streams. We seek recycling options for all of these items, depending on local options, and in 2009 we recycled more than 70 percent of our solid waste.

The total amount of waste we sent to landfills has declined 29 percent since 2007. We expect a further decrease in solid waste in 2010.

All of our facilities have solid waste recycling programs. Our recycling rate declined from 84 percent in 2008 to 71 percent in 2009. This drop in recycled percentages is primarily the result of the sale or closure of six yarn plants in 2008 and 2009 (yarn and other fibers account for the majority of our recycled materials). However, our primary yarn suppliers maintain comprehensive recycling programs to ensure that cotton waste is minimized and reused in a wide range of products such as rugs, floor mats, pillowcases and mop heads.

  • We recycle waste fabric from our textile cutting operations, which is spun into yarn that can be used in garments such as socks, rather than being disposed of.
  • At our 110-acre headquarters complex in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, we have a comprehensive recycling program for solid waste, with a goal of diverting 70 percent of all waste generated from a landfill. All landscape waste from the complex is reused rather than going to a landfill, and we are actively analyzing options for reducing food waste to landfills, such as on-campus composting.
